Liège - candidate city for Expo 2017
Liège is a candidate to host Expo 2017. In fact, its candidacy is supported by the Belgian federal government. This global project is reminiscent of the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. And if it is hosted by Liège, Expo 2017 will attract several million visitors to Belgium.
The theme for the candidacy is connectivity, featuring the slogan Connecting the World, Linking People. This theme is very much in keeping with the reality in Belgium and Liège, situated as they are in the heart of Europe and open to the outside world. The site chosen for hosting Expo 2017 is Coronmeuse, north of Liège. Once the Expo is over, it will be converted into an eco-district.
In early June, the federal government will submit the candidacy to the International Exhibitions Bureau
(BIE). The BIE's General Assembly will decide in December 2012 which city is to organise Expo 2017. The organisation's 157 member states will each have one vote.
